I gave the idea of gender roles a good thought and came to a conclusion that I’m not much into roles. And that it wouldn’t really matter to me. However, working as a teacher I’ve come across a certain expectation on being a male teacher; one should be sporty and dexterous. When the lecture subject division was made I was immediately asked if I’d teach sports or handicrafts. Not that I disliked either one of them, but because I’m a man the expectation was that I’d teach one or the other.
The athletic team sports loving and nifty guy that builds his own house is a gender role I don’t wish to be categorized into, since that is not who I am. I can hardly change a tire to my bicycle. I’m alright with sports, but I’ve noticed myself constantly being irritated by noticing that pupils seem to define a real man as one who likes sports. As an art teacher, I find this kind of assumption horrific. According to the pupils, the fine arts isn’t exactly suitable for grown men. It is horrible that small kids have learned these kinds of prejudices.
